Certificate of Marriage

The certificate of marriage is an official document issued by the Civil Registry that certifies the act of marriage, which can be civil or canonical. It must contain the full name, date and place of birth of the contracting parties, date and place in which the marriage was contracted, the organisation where it was registered and entry number. It shall not be confused with the ecclesiastical marriage certificate, issued by the parish priest to practice the registration of the religious marriage before the Civil Registry.

There is a large number of procedures for which a marriage certificate is required: application for Spanish nationality by marriage, residence permit or widow’s pension, for the registration of children, marriage annulment, divorce or separation, etc.
